Elegant but edgy, Mrs. Hobbs

is a sultry, cabaret singer and accordion player. Mixing and mashing up jazz, rock, glam, tango, punk, gypsy, classical, and minimalist influences, her songs are filled with “mood”: melancholic, sensuous, humorous. Whether performing original songs or what have been said to be the best interpretations of others’ songs, Mrs. Hobbs is changing people’s ideas of what accordion music can be.

Mrs. Hobbs is the “nom de musique” of Diana Hobstetter. Diana became a "musician" in early 2005 when she acquired her button accordion. Of course, she always had a love of music, having sung in the high school chorus, been a DJ at her college radio station, lived with musicians in a boat community in France, and sung lullabies to her daughter, but she had never played an instrument until then.

She taught herself the accordion and started playing around Los Angeles at venues such as Bordello Bar, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, Highways Performance Space, Club Ding-A-Ling, the Mbar, the Talking Stick, the UnUrban, James Gray Gallery, Elizabeth Paige Smith Atelier, Robin’s Sculpture Garden, the Abbot Kinney Festival, and the Los Angeles Accordion Festival.

Diana Hobstetter is also a visual artist and web designer and recently started hoop-dancing.

Mrs. Hobbs & The Q & A
The band "Mrs. Hobbs & The Q & A" was formed in early 2008 with Mrs. Hobbs being joined by Annabelle Cabrera on violin and Quentin Josephy on percussion.

Annabelle Cabrera has been performing as a freelance classical violinist in Los Angeles since 1995 with a variety of orchestras including Culver City-Marina
Del Rey Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, Carson Symphony, Torrance Symphony, and Burbank Philharmonic, as well as recently appearing with the Del Atkins Trio.

Quentin Josephy has been deeply involved with the Afro-Cuban music and dance community in Los Angeles for over 5 years. He has studied with the likes of Lazaro Galarraga, Michael Spiro, Luka Brandoli, Bobby Wilmore and others. A former modern dancer with the Rudy Perez Performance Ensemble in the '80s, he is currently revisiting his dance roots with classes in Afro-Cuban folkloric dance. Quentin is also a Pilates master teacher. Contact "The Qman" at alignstudio.com

Annabelle and Diana have been friends since the mid-90s, then when Mrs. Hobbs developed as a musician, their friendship developed a new musical bond. Quentin and Diana met when they both collaborated with mutual friends, Anne & Jeff Grimaldo of the modern dance company, Naked With Shoes, for "QuattroFormaggio: Common Side Effects" at Highways Performance Space in late 2007.

Now they are bringing all their post-modern cabaret, classical, and Afro-Cuban influences together for "Mrs. Hobbs & The Q & A". Their first performance was at the First Annual Los Angeles Accordion Festival in June 2008.

Multi-Media Collaborations
Mrs. Hobbs enjoys collaborating with artists of different media, including Anne & Jeff Grimaldo of the modern dance company "Naked With Shoes" ("365 Days/365 Plays" and "QuattroFormaggio", both at Highways Performance Space), the performance artist/poet/guitarist/trombonist/singer/songwriter Jerry the Priest, the poet Milo Martin, the shadow-puppeteer Poli Marichal, tango dancers Stefan Fabry and Mitra Martin, and visual/performance artist Amy Kaps.

Why the Accordion?

A clear plastic toy accordion was first espied in 2005 and subsequently purchased by "zee artiste", after which a real adult version was acquired.

There is the feeling of strapping it on and holding it to one's chest, the breathing of the accordion upon squeezing, the movement of the bellows. There are the sounds that resonate, the richness of the tones, the deep bass notes, the high sighs, the fullness of sound, and sometimes even a whisper.

Then there were the years spent in France seeing accordion players in the streets that undoubtably played a part in the love of the accordion.

Mrs. Hobbs plays a Hohner Panther 3-row button accordion in black. The 3 rows on the right are in the keys of G, C, and F. There are 12 bass chord buttons on the left.

This is not a piano accordion. This kind of accordion is popular with Latino music (Tejano, Conjunto, etc.), but that music tends to use only the right side, often removing the bass reeds to make the instrument lighter. Mrs. Hobbs uses both the bass and treble sides; sometimes one side or the other, sometimes both sides together, depending on the song. And, of course, Mrs. Hobbs plays in her own unique style.

In early 2008, Mrs. Hobbs was GIVEN a piano accordion (48-button bass/chord), which she has started to play and write songs with. She even purchased a 120-bass piano accordion, but has not begun to seriously work with that one yet.
